Baby Carrier Recall: 447,000 Recalled Due to Fall Hazard

Baby Carrier Recall: 447,000 Recalled Due to Fall Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have announced a baby carrier recall of Dorel Juvenile Infant Car Seat/Carriers.

The press release by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that when the product is used as a baby carrier, the child restraint handle to the seat can loosen and fall off. This poses as a fall hazard to infants.

Dorel Juvenile has disclosed that there have been 77 reported instances where the child restraint handle has either partially or fully come off the carrier. Injuries have ranged from bumps and bruises to a head injury.

The baby carrier recall includes: Safety 1st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer and Disney branded infant car seat/carriers. They were sold with Travel Systems. The stroller portion of the travel system is not affected by this recall. They were manufactured from January 6, 2008 through April 6, 2009. They were sold nationwide from January 2008 through December 2009 for between $120 and $220.

The CPSC told CNN that the baby carrier can still be used as a car seat: “There’s nothing wrong with the seat. Once it’s set in the car there’s absolutely no issue.”

Dorel Juvenile is offering a repair kit for consumers affected by this recall. The repair kit contains new bolts that consumers can attach to the handle and seat carrier. They can order these free repair kits by contacting Dorel Juvenile at 866-762-3316.

The CPSC warned parents not to use the car seat/carrier as a baby carrier until they use the repair kit. Patty Davis, a spokeswoman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, told the AP “You don’t want to take a chance by using this recalled car seat carrier, until you have the repair kit in place. The handle can fall off and the car seat carrier can drop, injuring your infant.” source Findslaw

Baby Carrier Recalls. Baby Carrier Warnings

March 18th, 2010 Posted in Carrier Recalls | No Comments »

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, they are preparing to issue a warning about baby slings before the end of the week.

Baby slings are carriers that allow parents to keep their infants strapped close to their chest. Although they may look safe – they may not be.

According to Associated Press, these cuddly slings will soon be the subject of a government safety warning due to the fact that infants carried in these slings could potentially be suffocated.

According to Inez Tannenbaum, head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, they know of too many deaths in these slings and the hazard for very small babies is real.

No particular sling was named however Consumer Reports expressed concerns back in 2008.
Consumer Product Safety Commission links to recalls of the “Ellaroo” which was recalled in September of 2009, the Infantino recalled in 2007 and the Maya Wrap recalled as early as 2001.

Consumer Reports expressed concerns about Infantino’s Sling Rider, a “bag-style” sling that cradles the baby in a curved position. Safety advocates frown on this “C-like” hold because it can cause a young baby’s head to flop forward and restrict the baby’s breathing ability.

Associated Press said that a baby could turn toward a parent’s chest or belly while in the carrier and actually smother. Although the Slingrider was recalled in 2007 due to problems with the plastic sliders on the strap, there have been no recalls because of a suffocation risk.

Baby Carrier Types Reviews. Slings, Front Carrier, Backpacks
Perhaps the world’s oldest baby product, baby carriers have been used since the dawn of civilization as a way to keep infants close but allow parents the freedom to continue working and caring for their family. Baby carriers are contraptions made of fabric reinforced with plastic or metal buckles and bindings that secure a baby to a parent’s torso, allowing for hands-free carrying.

There are 3 basic types of baby carriers: slings, front carriers and backpacks.

The most organic baby carrier, a sling is simply a long piece of fabric that wraps around an adult’s body and fastens at one shoulder. Slings can be adjusted to allow babies to lie in the fetal position, face outward, or even straddle their parent’s hip. Slings can be used from birth and are popular with breastfeeding moms.

Front carriers are more structured - they resemble mini-backpacks that are instead worn on the front of your body. Parents wear straps over each shoulder that join in the back for safety. Front carriers allow babies to hang only in a vertical position, so it is recommended that baby riders have at least some neck control. Babies can face in toward their parent’s chest or out toward the world.

Baby backpacks (or “frame carriers”) are larger carriers designed for prolonged baby carrying outings that provide a seat for babies to ride on your back. Like a hiking backpack, they have lightweight frames and extensive padded straps to help comfortably distribute baby’s weight. Suitable only for older babies who can hold their head up, backpacks are made of tougher, often waterproof material and frequently come with sun canopies.

An amazingly comfortable baby carrier, the Ergo offers good lumbar support and adjusts well to a multitude of body types making it the PERFECT baby carrier for mom, dad, grandparents and babysitters alike to use and share with ease. Best of all, the Ergo Baby Carrier supports a baby’s spine and hips in the healthiest way possible, a seated position (no spine compression), as recommend by chiropractors and family physicians worldwide.

The ERGO Baby Carrier has an ergonomic design which supports a correct sitting position for a baby’s hip, pelvis and spinal growth. It disperses most of a baby’s weight between your baby’s hips and thighs, which helps to eliminate compression of the spine when hanging by the crotch, which many other baby carrier designs require.

Parents everywhere share two simple desires: to make life easier for themselves, and to make life better for their baby and child. You can accomplish BOTH with the Ergo Baby Carrier! The Ergo Baby Carrier is a unique baby backpack that allows freedom of movement and complete comfort for any parent or caregiver. What can the Ergo Baby Carrier do that the Baby Bjorn (Snuggly) can’t?

Just about everything! If the Ergo Baby Carrier were just as heavily marketed as the Baby Bjorn, we KNOW it would quickly surpass it’s popularity and become the most seen and used baby carrier by parents nationwide. Sadly, many parents only know of the Baby Bjorn when they begin on their new journey into parenthood, and so it is without thought or question that they spend $100 + on their Baby Bjorn, without learning about it’s true limitations.

Designed as a FRONT carrier only, this is just a start to where the Ergo Baby Carrier and the Baby Bjorn differ. While this may be what many parents want at the time of their infant’s birth, eventually you will learn that having a baby strapped to your front only can be problematic if you wish to perform various tasks around your home, yard or while running errands. Carrying your baby on your chest does not make it easy to chop an onion, boil water, carry laundry, sweep the floor, garden or even carry groceries. The simple solution would be to put your baby on your back, piggyback style! Unfortunately the Baby Bjorn does not allow for this, as it has a limited carrying position to front carry (facing in and out) only. The Ergo Baby Carrier can be used in a variety of different carrying positions, including back carries! Use for front facing, hip/side carry, and back carry, piggy-back style.

One of the most often reported reviews of the Baby Bjorn is the fact that it is UNCOMFORTABLE on the wearer after only a few short weeks of use. The Baby Bjorn is designed entirely different than the Ergo Baby Carrier, and your child’s weight is not dispersed to the hips or upper thighs like the Ergo. Most parents tell us it becomes increasing painful to use the Baby Bjorn once your baby weighs more than 15 pounds or so. Having made the comparison ourselves, we have to agree. The Baby Bjorn supports your baby’s full weight on your shoulders and upper back. This creates much stress on your body, and will quickly cause pain (at least this was the case for us!). Once your baby reaches 15 pounds (or around 4 months), the Baby Bjorn became almost intolerable to wear. Designed using modern backpacking features with a supportive hip belt and lightly padded shoulders, the Ergo Baby Carrier will disperse the weight of your baby to your hips and thighs, making it much easier and more comfortable to carry even a 40 pound baby! In fact, the Ergo is so comfortable to wear, it makes a perfect baby carrier for grandparents to use, as well!

The Ergo Baby Carrier is perfect for the WHOLE family!

Another remarkably important difference between the Baby Bjorn and the Ergo Baby Carrier is how your baby is actually held and in the carrier itself. A painful condition known as spondylolisthesis is a common result of a baby being carried in some baby carriers by the crotch, similar to what we see in the Baby Bjorn. This position is not recommend by chiropractors and family physicians as it places excessive stress on the base of a baby’s delicate and developing spine. To prevent this spinal stress, the key is to have your baby always sitting with their knees at the same level as their bottom, and never below. The Ergo Baby Carrier is ergonomically designed to hold your baby in the healthiest position possible - a semi-squat or sitting position, where your baby’s legs are spread to hug your front, back or hips. This position is the same position used to treat hip dysplasia in young children, and promotes correct development and alignment of your baby’s hip sockets. The Ergo Baby Carrier prevents compression of the spine due to it’s unique design!

The Ergo Baby Carrier is a MUCH better value than the Baby Bjorn for it’s overall versatility, longevity and comfort. In fact, the Ergo has been selected as a Parenting Magazine Mom-Tested Product where it received top results from the toughest critics out there - moms across the country!
